SMF filter

SMF - 100% soot free

The centrepiece of all HJS exhaust treatment systems is the sintered metal filter (SMF®), a filter system with which HJS sets new standards in the global marketplace.

This closed 100% filter for trucks reduces the emissions of soot particles, including fine particulate matter, down to the limit of detection, with a filter efficiency of over 99%.

Servicing & Maintenance

The SMF® sintered metal filter and the systems based on it are exceptionally reliable in operation, low on maintenance and also benefit from a long service life. The pocket-type construction of the SMF® prevents clogging such as that familiar, for instance, from conventional ceramic filters with their honeycomb structure. This significantly increases the mileage before a filter requires cleaning, including in the case of older trucks. The upshot: depending on the engine type and operating profile of the vehicle, HJS filter systems only need to have stubborn residues cleaned out after covering a distance way in excess of 200,000 kilometres (120,000 miles).

Another advantage of the HJS filter is that operators are able to service and maintain them on their own premises without any difficulty. Neither is it necessary to send the systems back to HJS for cleaning, nor is there any need for complex cleaning equipment. This makes it possible to minimise the running costs for servicing and maintenance as well as the associated downtime costs.

Filter Cleaning

In addition to combustible soot particles, filter systems also remove from the exhaust gases all other particulate matter that cannot be regenerated. For the most part, this is ash from burnt engine oil. These residues must be removed from the filter by cleaning.

Put your trust in the SMF® when retrofitting your truck and benefit from our many years of experience in the business. Throughout Europe, over 1,500 trucks have already been successfully retrofitted with HJS particulate filters.

Cleaning Intervals

Experience has shown that an SMF® system offers three to four times more mileage than a conventional ceramic filter before it has to be cleaned for the first time. Thanks to this considerable servicing advantage, the two largest manufacturers of city buses, for example, already switched to fitting SMF® systems back in 2006. The filter systems can go far longer than 200,000 kilometres (120,000 miles) without having to be cleaned out.

‘Do It Yourself’

When a filter needs to be cleaned, this job can be done quickly and easily on the truck company’s own premises or at the local garage as part of the usual servicing measures. It is neither necessary to send the systems back to HJS, nor is there any need for complex cleaning equipment. The filter housing remains installed in the vehicle. All that is removed from the truck are the individual filter modules, which are then cleaned and freed of all residues with the aid of a commercially available high-pressure cleaner.

Technology & How it works

Installation of an SMF® sintered metal filter and the systems based on it is quick and simple. HJS diesel particulate filters are exceptionally reliable in operation and also benefit from a long service life. The pocket-type construction of the SMF® prevents clogging such as that familiar, for instance, from conventional ceramic filters with their honeycomb structure. The HJS filter system requires neither extra regeneration aids nor additives or any intervention in the engine management system. Electronic monitoring constantly guarantees the complete operability of the filter. Its modular design also minimises servicing and maintenance costs.

How The Filter Works

The hot exhaust gases from the engine – which contain soot particles – are fed into the filter housing and through the SMF® sintered metal filter developed by HJS. The gaseous components flow through the microscopic pores of the filter pockets; the soot particles, including the ultra-fine particles, are trapped on the surface and deposited on the individual filter pockets.

Filter Cleaning

The CRT® (Continuous Regeneration Technology) effect is used to break down the soot that collects in the SMF®. The HJS system combines a highly efficient, upstream diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with an SMF®. Optimised tuning of the system results in the filter being continuously and effectively freed from the deposited soot.
